A biogenic-silica O record of climatic change during the last glacial–interglacial transition in southwestern Alaska

چکیده
Despite growing evidence for environmental oscillations during the last glacial–interglacial transition from high latitude, terrestrial sites of the North Pacific rim, oxygen-isotopic records of these oscillations remain sparse. The lack of data is due partially to the paucity of lakes that contain carbonate sediment suitable for oxygen-isotopic analysis. We report here the first record of oxygen-isotopic composition in diatom silica ( OSi) from a lake in that region. OSi increases gradually from 19.0 to 23.5‰ between 12,340 and 11,000 C yr B.P., reflecting marked climatic warming at the end of the last glaciation. Around 11,000 C yr B.P., OSi decreases by 1.7‰, suggesting a temperature decrease of 3.5–8.9 °C at the onset of the Younger Dryas (YD) in southwestern Alaska. Climatic recovery began ca. 10,740 C yr B.P., as inferred from the increase of OSi to a maximum of 23.9‰ near the end of the YD. Our data reveal that a YD climatic reversal in southwestern coastal areas of Alaska occurred, but the YD climate did not return to full-glacial conditions. © 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). Abrupt climatic events during the last glacial-interglacial transition in Alaska
[1] Evidence is mounting that abrupt climatic shifts occurred during the last glacial-interglacial transition (LGIT) in the North Atlantic and other regions. However, few high-resolution climatic records of the LGIT exist from the high latitudes of the North Pacific rim. We analyzed lake sediments from southwestern Alaska for biogenic silica, organic carbon, organic nitrogen, diatom assemblages...

Paleoceanographic evidence from the Southern Ocean reveals an apparent stark meridional divide in biogeochemical dynamics associated with the glacial-interglacial cycles of the late Neogene. South of the present-day position of the Antarctic Polar Front biogenic opal is generally much more abundant in sediments during interglacials 5 compared to glacials. To the north, an anti-phased relationsh...
متن کاملAn Oxygen isotope record of lacustrine opal from a European Maar indicates climatic stability during the last interglacial
The penultimate temperate period, 127110 ka before present (BP), bracketed by abrupt shifts of the global climate system initiating and terminating it, is considered as an analogue of the Holocene because of a similar low global ice-volume. Ice core records as well as continental and marine records exhibit conflicting evidence concerning the climate variability within this period, the Last Inte...

The intensity and/or extent of the northeastern Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) varied in-phase with the Northern Hemisphere high latitude climate on millennial timescales during the last glacial period, indicating the occurrence of atmospheric and oceanic connections under glacial conditions. While millennial variability was reported for both the Greenland and the northern Atlantic Ocean dur...
